The Asscher Diamond Cut

The distinctive Asscher Cut is a method of diamond cutting dating back to 1902. It's named after its creators, the Asscher brothers, who also worked on the famous Cullinan Diamond.

Although out of fashion by the middle of the 20th century, Asscher cut diamonds have regained popularity since appearing on TV shows such as Sex and the City. Many people like to buy them as engagement rings or as stud earrings.

What Is An Asscher Cut Diamond?

The Asscher cut is a square cut similar in many ways to the emerald cut - it's sometimes valled the "square emerald". The cut stone is in the shape of a square with the corners "clipped", given a total of eight sides. The sides are stepped to give a feeling of depth to the stone. Some people have compared the interacting reflections of an Asscher cut diamond to a funhouse hall of mirrors.

There are many variations of the Asscher cut as determined by the attributes of the stone and the preference of the cutter. One specific form is the Royal Asscher cut. This cut has the distinction of being the first to have been patented.

The Asscher cut makes for a dramatic stone. It can either be set alone as a solitaire or surrounded by smaller diamonds. The best Asscher diamond jewelry is truly stunning.
