Rhinestones
Rhinestones - also known as paste diamonds - are an inexpensive alternative to real diamonds when you just want something that sparkles. They're often used when shiny stones are required in quantity, for example on a singer's stage costume, belts or on costume jewelry. For a relatively more subtle design they can be used as a trim.As with real diamonds rhinestones are usually clear white but also come in almost any colour.
Rhinestones are often associated with show business, dancers and also with singers as in the song Rhinestone Cowboy.
What Are Rhinestones?
The original rhinestones were crystals found on the shores of Austria's Rhine river, hence the name. Today the term is used for a wide range of cheap glittery diamond alternatives.
Materials
Modern rhinestones can be made from a variety of materials including glass, acrylic and quartz. A special foil backing is usually applied to the stone in order to produce the sparkle effect and they often have a flat back that makes for easier application. Because rhinestones are mass produced from cheap materials they tend to be delicate and need careful handling. As well as clothing and paste jewelry, rhinestones can be used to give a glittery effect to anything from scrapbook pages and craft projects to seasonal decorationa and even fingernails!
Although rhinestones have a poor reputation in some quarters I think they're fun! There's no denying the fun and visual spectacle of a mass of rhinestones reflecting the spotlights on stage. Even if you're not a professional performer, rhinestones are an affordable way to bling up your party or karaoke outfit.
