Yellow Diamonds

After blue, yellow is probably the most popular fancy diamond colour. The exact shade and hue varies considerably between stones and a large natural diamond with a deep yellow colour will be expensive. Probably too expensive for most people to buy.

Probably the most famous natural yellow diamond gemstone in the world is the Tiffany Diamond, as seen in the 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

What Is A Yellow Diamond?

Diamonds are usually more or less clear, however they can also be found in almost any colour. Coloured diamonds are usually described as "fancy".

The colour in a fancy diamond is due to small amounts of impurity. In the case of a yellow stone the colouring is typically caused by the presence of trace amounts of nitrogen. The quantities of impurity involved are small, typically no more than 0.1% nitrogen.

The exact shade and intensity of a yellow diamond can vary considerably from washy light yellow to a deep intense hue. The more intense colours are rarer in nature and also more popular, resulting in a considerable premium on the price. A deeply saturated canary yellow is particularly popular. Such "canaries" are sometimes referred to as cape series diamonds after the region in South Africa that was once known as "Cape Province".

For most people the idea of natural canary diamond jewelry will remain simply an unaffordable dream. However there are many artificially created versions on the market, as well as artificially coloured clear diamonds available to buy.
